Westfield High School Students Celebrate Cultural Diversity During International Night

10th annual International Night at WHS

Students at Westfield High School enjoyed cultural performances ranging from Greek Folk dancing to Chinese Yo-Yo as well as foods from around the world at the 10th annual WHS International Night on April 26, hosted by the WHS Language Department.

Said World Languages Department Supervisor David Greer, “[International Night] is a great way for students to showcase their world language skills.”

The performances featured Italian, Spanish, Greek, Korean, Filipino, and Chinese culture through dancing, singing, poetry reading, and instrumental acts.

Said event coordinator and Spanish teacher Rose Calimano, “[International Night] is an evening for students to demonstrate pride in their own culture and heritage, as well as a way for them to feel connected to their school community.”

While some performances were from cultures included in the Westfield curriculum, others were from a student’s native heritage, such as Greek Folk dancing and Korean and Filipino music.

After the performances, students feasted on a variety of international foods made by other students. “International night allows people to take pride in their culture and talent and I look forward to the acts each year. Also, the huge spread of amazing food is another reason that I make sure to never miss the evening!” said Senior Alexandra Kapadia.

Senior Rob Romano, who performed a Spanish rap in addition to hosting the event, said, “When I look at the vast display of flags across the cafeteria where the event is held, I think about how beautiful our diverse world is, and how every culture is a gift to be shared. On International Night, those gifts keep on giving.”
