Homecoming Events Washed Out

Westfield High School's annual homecoming events have been canceled for tomorrow afternoon.

The severe weather forecast has put a damper on the traditional Homecoming festivities. All outdoor events were canceled Tuesday morning.

The campus was full of energy, enthusiasm, and ideas for the annual Homecoming activities, which include a town-wide “spirit” parade organized by clubs and sports teams, outdoor live performances by the Folio, an outdoor carnival, the lighting of a huge bonfire behind , and the crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen.

“The students have worked so hard to make these events fun and exciting, and the disappointment is palpable,” said Vice Principal Lydia Suarez-McNulty, who added that "the safety of our students is first and foremost in our minds."

A canned-food drive, which has been taking place all week, is still in
full-swing. Students collected so much food that it is “hard to store in the building,” said Suarez-McNulty. Igniting the competitive spirit among students was the promise of a bagel breakfast for the homeroom that collected the most canned goods.

The drive will benefit the Holy Trinity Food Pantry. Items will be distributed to local families in need in time for Thanksgiving.
