Four Candidates to Vie for Three Board of Ed Seats

Three incumbents will seek to retain their seats while a newcomer throws his hat into the ring.

Four candidates have filed petitions to run for the three three-year terms that are expiring on the Westfield Board of Education.

Incumbents Ginny Leiz, Mitch Slater, and Brendan Galligan will be challenged by newcomer Jonathan Blitt this Tuesday, Nov. 5, according to the Union County Clerk's Office.

Leiz, a Board member since 2001, serves as the chair of the Long-Range Planning Committee. Slater, who is seeking his second term, chairs the Technology committee. Galligan, a Westfield High School graduate and the youngest member to serve on the Board in decades, was elected to fill a one-year unexpired term. If elected, this will be his first full three-year term.

"I am thankful for the opportunity that the Town of Westfield gave me last year of an unexpired term, and I look forward to serving the residents of Westfield for at least another three years as a member of the Board of Education," Galligan stated.

Blitt, a father of three, has two children in Tamaques Elementary School. He was not immediately available for comment Tuesday evening.
