Slaves in Colonial New Jersey

Histories of slavery often focus on the southern part of colonial America.  What is less well known is its extent in the north, including the colony of New Jersey.  The program includes a general overview of slavery, its origins in New Jersey, the degree to which it was established in the colony and laws governing slavery up to the Revolution.  Tours of the 1740 era farmhouse will be conducted.  Open hearth cooking will be demonstrated, focusing on foods typical of a slave diet.  The program is appropriate for teens and adults.
