NYC health commissioner to speak at library

The Anne M. Hale Speaker series will continue on Thursday, Sept. 30, at 8 p.m. with a talk, "Prescription for a Healthy Nation," by Dr. Thomas Farley, New York City Health Commissioner.

Farley, who grew up in Westfield, was appointed last year to head the agency of more than 6,000 staffers. He previously served as chair of the Department of Community Health Sciences at Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, New Orleans, and as senior adviser to former NYC Health Commissioner Thomas Frieden.  Farley also worked for the Center for Disease Control's Epidemic Intelligence Service and the Louisiana Office of Public Health.

A trained pediatrician, Farley received MD and master of public health degrees from Tulane.

Farley coauthored "Prescription for a Healthy Nation: A New Approach to Improving Our Lives by Fixing Our Everyday World," a book published in 2005 by Beacon Press. He also has published numerous articles on a wide range of medical topics.

Farley's talk, open to the public, will take place at The Westfield Memorial Library, 550 East Broad St.  Those planning to attend are asked to register on the library website at www.wmlnj.org (click on online calendar) or by phone at 908-789-4090, extension 4140.

The Speaker Series is named after Anne Hale, a Westfield resident who had been a library patron as well as a trustee of the Westfield Y and an active member of other local organizations. She died in 2007.

The series, hosted by the Friends of the Westfield Memorial Library, is financed through a grant from the Thomas Glasser Foundation and by the Anne and Lee Hale Fund.

The speech is the third this year in the popular Hale series. Assemblyman Jon Bramnick and ex-baseball player/manager Jeff Torborg spoke earlier in the year, and author Arthur Lefkowitz will give the final talk in the current series on Nov. 17.
