International Day of Peace

Christopher Academy Children and Peace Education

September 21 is the annual International Day of Peace. It is celebrated by nations, the military, political groups and people around the world and sponsored by the United Nations.

Christopher Academy children will celebrate on the 21st by singing a peace song around our Peace Pole, lighting a candle for peace, making and hanging blue and white ribbons around the school's campuses as well as reading stories about peace and respect of others.

Peace Education is very much a part of the Montessori curriculum staring with our Grace and Courtesy lesson. In Grace and Courtesy the children from the ages of 2.5 to 7 learn good manners principles as well as the importance of respecting others and their work within the classroom.

The curriculum also includes what Montessori educators call Cultural Studies.  Our Cultural Studies expose the children to the world around them. This includes the study of the earth, the plants and animals that inhabit it, and how to maintain this environment for the future. These lessons stress culture and mores of the peoples of the world.

Because of this our classrooms are peaceful environments in which children can work on their individual lessons in a meaningful and always friendly environment.
