george melloan: anne hale series speaker

Westfield resident George Melloan, retired deputy editor, international, for The Wall Street Journal, will be the kickoff speaker for the 2012 Anne Hale Speaker Series at Westfield Memorial Library.

            Melloan, who also penned the Global View, an op-ed column for The Journal, will speak on Thursday, April 12, at 7 p.m. at the library, 550 East Broad St. His topic will be “Returning the US to Economic Stability.”

            In his most recent book, The Great Money Binge, Melloan discusses the growing national debt and calls for a return to supply-side principles. He details what is needed to return the nation to economic vitality.

            Melloan spent more than a half-century at The Journal, including stints as a London-based foreign correspondent and as head of the overseas editorial pages.  He was recipient of the Gerald Loeb Award for distinguished business and financial journalism, and twice won the Daily Gleaner award of the Inter-American Press Association for writing about the rising Soviet influence in Central America. He also was presented the Barbara Olson Award for excellence and independence in journalism from The American Spectator.

            The Speakers Series, named after the late Anne Hale, a library patron who was active in Westfield organizations, will continue on Tuesday, May 8, with a lecture on “What’s New at Lincoln Center” by its chairwoman, Katherine Farley, a former Westfield resident. Arthur Lefkowitz, a popular author who won raves for his past Hale appearances, will return to speak on Sept. 13 abut “Eyewitness Images from the  Revolution.”

“The Conductor’s Life” is the title for the Oct. 11 talk by David Wroe, a Westfielder who is music director and conductor of the Westfield Symphony.  

            Pre-registration is required for the Melloan talk that is open to the public. Registration is available by logging on to www.wmlnj.org and clicking the Online Calendar, or by phoning the library at 908-789-2090 extension 0.

            The Anne Hale Speaker Series is made possible through grants provided by the Thomas Glasser Foundation and the Anne and Lee Hale Fund, and is hosted by the Friends of the Westfield Memorial Library.
