Dolan Reports School Crime Remains Flat

Incidents of vandalism, violence and substance abuse last year are similar to recent years

Instances of substance abuse, violence and vandalism in the Westfield Public Schools in the 2008-2009 school year were roughly flat compared to previous school years, superintendent Margaret Dolan said during Tuesday evening's Board of Education meeting.

Some of the 18 total incidents involved more than one student, compared to 20 incidents in each of the last three terms.

Overall, “we’re in just about the same place” as in recent years, she told the Board of Education at its meeting.

The report summarized information that was requested by the state. In just a few instances, the police were notified but a complaint was filed in only one case. The incidents were resolved by short-term suspensions of less than 10 days in many cases, Dolan said.

This year, the school district has been aware of a handful of instances of graffiti, though not limited to school property.

“We ask the community that if they see anything, to report it to the police,” Dolan said. “It’s not good for anybody in town.”

Westfield High School used to have a police officer on campus, with the support of the town’s police department, but in recent year’s budget constraints have prevented that.

“I do think there is value in it,” Dolan said. “We understand we’re not the only one in difficult times economically.”

The next school board meeting will be on Nov. 10.
