BOE Applies for Grant Funds to Upgrade Edison Security

Older doors to be replaced for safety reasons.

The Board of Education is seeking grant funds to upgrade security at Edison Intermediate School with the installation of new doors in a portion of the building.

The BOE will be seeking $48,798 in funds from the New Jersey School Boards Association Insurance Group's Eric North Sub Fund, which will cover safety issues. BOE Business Administrator Bob Berman explained to board members Tuesday evening that the funds will replace doors in the EIS wing previously used to house Pre-K programs near the school's auditorium.

Berman said the current doors in that wing of the building are the original doors from the 1960s which involve a spring push bar to open from the inside. He said the doors are chained shut at night and monitored during the day to prevent anyone from obtaining access by pulling the door from the outside with excessive force.

Berman said the doors have become expensive to maintain and installing more modern doors will allow greater security in that wing of the building. Berman said he expects a decision on the grant funding in the coming months to allow for the new doors to be installed.

"The doors can't secure part of the building appropriately," he said.
