Blue Devils Rout Monroe 10-1

The Westfield hockey team earned an impressive 10-1 out-of-conference victory over Monroe.

Sophomore Andrew Stern scored the first goal of the game early in the first period and then scored Westfield's 10th goal at the end of the third period to lead the Blue Devil's to a 10-1 win against the Monroe High School Falcons on Monday afternoon at Warinanco Park in Roselle.

Fellow sophomores Anderson Eckert and Christian Rosa scored two goals of their own to help the Westfield offensive effort.

Other than Stern's conversion of a nice pass from Jeremy De Dea for the Blue Devil's early lead, the first period was largely played with the Blue Devil's on their heels as a result of four consecutive Westfield penalties and an inspired early effort by an outmanned Monroe (8-8) team.

Another sophomore, Dane Huber, was rewarded for his efforts in helping to kill off the penalties by scoring a goal of his own late in the first period to give Westfield a 2-0 lead going into the break. The second period saw Westfield wear down a tiring Monroe squad and assume control of the game with goals by Liam Devin and Eckert.

Oddly enough Westfield goalie Steven Wronski's best save of the night ultimately resulted in Monroe's lone goal. With Wesfield seemingly coasting to a win with a 4-0 lead in the third period, the Blue Devils briefly broke down defensively resulting in three consecutive breakaways for Monroe.

On the third, Wronski raced out of his net challenging the Monroe shooter. Wronski made the acrobatic save but his momenum carried him sliding toward cener ice and he was unable to corral the rebound.  Monroe was able to collect the puck and deposit into the unguarded Blue Devil net.

The Monroe threat was quickly extinguished with two quick Westfield goals, the second of which a brilliant end to end rush by Sam Meyer, that put the game out of reach.

Junior defenseman, John Macik, who had an excellent game defensively also scored for the Blue Devils.

The Blue Devils (9-5-3) play again on Wednesday night against Union County leader Summit (10-3) at Warinanco Park.
