UPDATE: Show Canceled Due to Storm: All Over The Place: Something To Brag About

If you like your rock and roll with a little piano and cello, Jack Brag might be the band for you. Find out this Saturday night in Sayreville.

You can listen to Jack Brag and other New Jersey artists on EXIT 135, every Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. on All Over The Place Internet Radio.

Please check out the Spotify playlist featuring the music of Jack Brag and some of Tony Donato’s favorite songs!

For five years, the band Jack Brag has been carving out a unique niche in the New Jersey music scene by adding musically theatrical elements to the standard rock band lineup.

According to bass player and main songwriter Tony Donato, it gives the music an orchestral sheen.

Music lovers can find out for themselves as the band plays a gig at Buddies Tavern in Sayreville this Saturday night. The show is being sponsored by local Internet radio station BlowUpRadio.com.

“I was always a fan of pop and rock music but I started meeting some interesting people like Jay (cellist Jay Varga from Jersey City) and Jim (pianist and vocalist Jim Robertazzi of Clifton) who has a background in musical theater. Let’s take the guitar-bass-drums format and augment it with these orchestral, Vaudeville-type touches,” said Donato, who resides in Harrison.

The other member of the band is drummer Bill Quinn of Belleville. Guitarist Rich Ferriera recently left the band.

The origins of the band's name contain a nod to history that dovetails nicely with the band’s musical goals. “I was always fascinated by late 19th century culture. ‘Jack Brag’ is an old English expression to refer to someone as a pretender who fakes his way into the company of those above his station. I thought it had a little swagger to it,” said Donato.

The band was relatively easy to bring together. Donato recruited Robertazzi early on. “Jim was the one that I knew the longest. I was in a previous band and I sought him out as a singer, but he didn’t care for what I was working on. As soon as I started this new concept, I thought of Jim immediately,” said Donato.

Jack Brag has released two albums so far, their self-titled debut from 2008 and Unbroken White, which was released a year ago on the Main Man label.

Currently, the band is playing one or two shows every month and is in the process of recruiting a new guitarist. “Up to now the band has been very cello- and piano-centric. We’re looking for someone who can expand the scope of the guitar in the band,” noted Donato.

Donato has written a number of demos for the next album, so we can look forward to a new Jack Brag album soon.

Jack Brag will be appearing at Buddies Tavern with Zigman Bird and Christian Beach. The show is being sponsored by BlowUpRadio.com. Buddies Tavern is located at 277 Johnsons Lane in Sayreville. Doors open at 8:30 p.m. Music begins at 9 p.m. Jack Brag goes on at 10 p.m. Admission is free.

You're welcome! I'm sure you'll enjoy these boards a lot.

The trouble is, that once the 'boards' are off the front page, one can't follow the discussion. TheRead More 'shout stream' has gone away with the redesign of Patch. The 'reply' feature has also gone. Somehow I don't see these boards as being all that useful for public discussion and interaction. The more effective place is on the articles themselves--they get more page space, and they tend to have a more 'discussion friendly' topic for conversation than the random board postings.

I agree -- they should have a separate tab for Letters to the Editor

Apparently Mr. Common Sense you were not at the Board meeting because if you were you would knowRead More that it was clearly outlined that all decisions and reporting of this police officer will be from the police department -- not the school. So are you saying that Lucy Biegler is now the new spokeswoman ? You said she is calling out the position for what it REALLY is ? The discrepancy in outlined roles and the vagueness of this position is reason enough to question it. Ofcourse you have an opinion , but because our children will be directly affected I think our concerns should be heavily weighed . .

Rob -- to answer your question , I was never crazy about the DARE program and yes , I was disturbedRead More that the officer carrying a gun in school . I didn't like it . So I am being consistent. I was new to the school at the time .

I have no problem with a policeman in school. His ability to carry a gun is no different on schoolRead More property than elsewhere. Let us make sure we all understand that the man is a policeman, not a counselor. I think the idea that the children will be safer is absurd. Cameras in every public area in every school, monitored by the police ,would probably provide better surveillance. I object to any understanding between the Board and the Town which creates a hybrid officer who is required to act differently in school than he does on the street. In the past, the police have been hobbled by "arrangements" between the then BOE and the Town that the police would not enter the schools without permission. Investigations would not be conducted until the Board had finished its investigation. A "safe haven" had been created. This is wrong. In school, the children knew they didn't have to worry about police and acted accordingly. This is wrong. If the people want a policeman in school, let him be a policeman. Let him act as he does on the street. He is not a trained counselor . Don't think he will solve children's problems. At the moment, I don't think the entire picture has been given to us. I cannot believe there is not some writing between Dr.Dolan and the WPD which outlines the authority of each towards one another and over the SRO. I don't believe the BOE is about to allow the " fox into the hen house" without promises that restrict the policeman. I oppose any restriction of a policeman in the performance of his duty. I do not want to see the return of the "arrangements" of the past. The BOE and the Town must provide us with the full agreement or we should dismiss the thought of a SRO.
