What happened in Westfield this week?

The  Tuesday accepted the recommendation of its Facilities Committee to include the  and  installation projects as as part of a bond referendum ballot to be voted on this fall.

As a result of the Board’s action, voters will make one decision that will determine the fate of two separate multi-million dollar projects. The Board had previously approved bonds referendums for long-sought roof repairs on a dozen district buildings as well as a lighted turf field to be installed at . The two projects carry a total estimated price-tag of more than $16 million.

Only four individuals submitted a nominating petition for the  general election this fall in time to meet Tuesday’s deadline, meaning the individuals will run uncontested for the four Board seats available during the November vote.

Richard Mattessich, the current Board president, submitted a nomination petition in hopes of continuing to serve the Board, according to a press release distributed at Tuesday's meeting. Gretchan Ohlig, who was  to fill a vacancy left by former president Julia Walker, also submitted a petition to remain on the Board. Both current members will fill three-year seats that begin in 2013.

Residents  and J. Brendan Galligan also submitted nomination petitions. Biegler will occupy a three-year seat, while Galligan’s term will be for one year.

Edwin Simmons, 22, of Westfield, was arrested shortly after 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 7 for allegedly committing burglary and theft at a residence on the 600 block of Radley Road in Westfield. 

Simmons was allegedly fleeing the scene in a van when was apprehended by police a short distance from the residence. 

Police recovered approximately $7,000 in stolen property, including jewelry, cameras and computers. A neighbor's call to police to report suspicious activity led to the arrest.
