Tonight's Town Council Agenda
The Westfield Town Council will meet at 8 p.m. in Council Chambers of the Municipal Building.
Tonight's meeting of the will include an ordinance to amend the code of the Town of Westfield, specifically Chapter 11 "Fire Protection."
Councilman Keith Loughlin, vice chair of the public safety committee, explained that this ordinance would amend an existing ordinance and will allow the to raise the fee to $75 for firefighters to take the initial exam.
Loughlin said the State of New Jersey recently raised this fee and by getting this ordinance amended, the Town of Westfield will be prepared if or when the SAFER (Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response) grants the town applied for are approved. The Town will be advised as to whether or not the grants have been awarded in September. The councilman said if the grants are not approved the Town will assess its ability to hire new firefighters at that time.

Concerns over staffing levels were ignited after a three-alarm fire destroyed a home on in mid-May. When the fire began, one of the WFD's units was responding to a call for mutual aid from Springfield, leaving only one unit with three members available to respond.
