South Side Train Parking Lot Exit to Become Right Turn Only

Exit at South Avenue and Boulevard to be made safer.

The exit from the south side train station parking lot at the intersection of South Avenue and Boulevard will become right turn only based on the new South Avenue street scape project.

Councilman Mark Ciarrocca, who chairs the Council's public safety committee, made the announcement at Tuesday evening's Council meeting, explaining the new one way direction will make the intersection safer for drivers and pedestrians. The exit from the parking lot is being redesigned to require only right turns out of the lot. Previously drivers could make left turns or cut straight across to Boulevard. There are no lights or stop signs for South Avenue traffic at the intersection.

"This is an issue of public safety," Ciarrocca said.

The intersection has been known to be a hazzard to cars and pedestrians, mainly from cars either making a left out of the parking lot or trying to cut across South Avenue. In addition to safety concerns, the new exit plan is likely to improve traffic flow with drivers not waiting for others to make a left on to, or cross over, the busy South Avenue.

With the redesign of South Avenue's street scape, which is being done to improve the aesthetic appeal of the business district, more businesses and restaurants are planned for the corridor. Ciarrocca said these businesses will bring more pedestrians to the street and the redesign of the exit is needed.

"While it may be an inconvience it will be safer," he said.
