Potholes Increase Along Gallows Hill Road

Well traveled street gains more potholes after heavy rains

Drivers along Gallows Hill Road need to prepare to swerve a little more to avoid damaging their car, following an increase in potholes likely caused by the heavy rains over the last few weeks.

Drivers turning off of East Broad Street on to Gallows Hill will find several additional potholes in the street before they reach the first speed hump. Additional potholes are on the side of the street adjacent to Fairview Cemetery. Areas of the road near Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, which had several preexisting potholes, have seen an increase in the number of potholes.

Drivers along the road in recent days have been seen taking evasive maneuvers or slowing down to avoid potential damage to their vehicles.

The road is also used by drivers utilizing the back driveway of Union County College, either seeking to travel towards North Avenue via Garwood or out to Route 22 through Westfield and Mountainside.

When excess moisture seeps into the roadway following heavy rains the underside of the roadway becomes softer, causing a pothole as the weather starts to dry up. With the recent heavy rains, more potholes have been spotted on heavily traveled main roads in Westfield.
