Police Receive Federal Grant

Almost $10K to pay for wireless system upgrades

The U.S. Department of Justice has awarded an almost $10,000 grant to the Westfield Police Department for upgrades to the department's wireless computer network.

The $9,986 grant was awarded through the justice department's Edward Byrne Memorial Assistance Grant Program. Union County officials announced the Westfield grant Thursday afternoon as part of an announcement of over $1.3 million in grants for towns in Union County.

The grant will fund an upgrade to the police department's wireless network being offered by Verizon. The telecomm company is offering the wireless upgrades for local police departments.
