Oliveira Beats Barabas in Westfield's Only Contested Race

Republican David Oliveira will face Democrat Matthew Sontz on Nov. 5.

Republican Third Ward candidate David Oliveira won more than three times as many votes as challenger Diane Barabas in Westfield's only contested race in Tuesday's Primary Election.

Oliveira, who has lived in town for a decade, has vowed to focus on "quality of life issues" if elected. The father of two daughters stated that he shares the same vision as many Westfield residents: "maintain a safe, family-friendly town with an excellent school system and a thriving downtown."

A certified public accountant who currently serves as Clark's school business administrator, Oliveira said his professional experience would lend him insight into "maintaining fiscal discipline while delivering the local services that residents desire."

On his Facebook page, Oliveira thanked Westfield's Third Ward residents for their support, writing: "WE WON! Thank you to all the citizens of the 3rd Ward for your overwhelming support today. I will continue to work hard to earn your vote on November 5, 2013."

Following an unsuccessful run for Union County Freeholder in 2012, Barabas said the nine-member Town Council should have more female representation. Currently, JoAnn Neylan and Vicki Kimmins are the council's only female members. Barabas was also overlooked in 2011 when Mark LoGrippo was picked to fill the Town Council seat left vacant by former Councilman Mark Ciarrocca’s confirmation as a state judge.
