Legislature Passes Kean and Munoz Bills Today

Bill to ban electronic cigarettes on Assembly and Senate health committee agendas.

Bills sponsored by two local lawmakers passed the full Assembly today.

The full Assembly passed a bill sponsored by Assemblywoman Nancy Munoz (R-Summit) banning the sale of electronic cigarettes to minors. The bill, co-sponsored by Assemblywoman Connie Wagner (D-Paramus), came after Munoz read a newspaper article about the electronic cigarettes and finding out about the chemicals that the devices contain.

"Who wants kids inhaling that?" Munoz said. "I mean are you kidding me."

Munoz and Wagner have introduced a second bill on the subject of electronic cigarettes banning the smoking of them in public. Munoz explained this bill, which has passed the Assembly health committee, would help public health by preventing the chemicals from becoming second hand smoke. The ban on electronic cigarettes in public was on the Senate health committee agenda today. Munoz' 21st district colleague, Senate Minority Leader Tom Kean Jr. (R-Westfield), is a member of the health committee in his chamber.

The Assembly passed a health related bill sponsored by Kean and Sen. Robert Singer (R-Ocean County) today. The bill establishes a lung cancer research fund, which will be funded by a special tax check off by state residents. The bill has already passed the full Senate and now heads to Gov. Jon Corzine for his signature or veto.
