Crossing Guard Planned for Hyslip and First

North Chestnut and Maye crossing guard still under consideration.

A crossing guard is slated for the intersection of Hyslip Avenue and First Street.

Councilman Mark Ciarrocca, the chairman of the Council's public safety committee, announced Wednesday night that the committee had voted in favor of the crossing guard based on the results of a traffic study. The study, conducted by the police, showed that on average, 166.2 children cross the intersection each morning.

"Given the volume, the committee made the recommendation to put a crossing guard there," Ciarrocca said.

Last month, Councilman Tom Bigosinski presented his colleagues with a petition signed by residents in the area of the intersection and other parts of the Fourth Ward requesting a crossing guard for the intersection. The intersection is considered a key intersection for students walking to and from McKinley School each morning.

Ciarrocca announced that a requested crossing guard at the intersection of North Chestnut and Maye is still under consideration by his committee. He said a final traffic count needs to be conducted in order to provide the necessary data to the committee. Initial traffic counts have shown a potential need, which the public safety committee wants to confirm before a final decision is made.
