Council Hopeful Asks Voters to Support a Female Candidate

Diane Barabas, a Westfield resident, questions why only two out of eight Council seats are occupied by women.

The passing of two female icons makes one think of the influence they had on our Society.

Annette Funnicello made her debut in the 50’s as a very young girl on the Mousketeers. Margaret Thatcher was a middle-aged woman who became the Prime Minister of Britain. Indelible!

So why is still so hard to imagine women in Elected Office? The Mothers, Wives, Caregivers are the nuts and bolts of society yet many times women decide they do not want to compete with  men or better yet, if they step out their initiatives are spurned?

Women need to be included. Power is not necessarily the equation, it’s called INCLUSION!

The Westfield Town Council seats eight members, two of which are held by women but there have been no new attempts in eight years to make any changes. The Mayor appointed and addition in the last election by a male, but no discussion to consider that a women might just  be a welcomed member?  Two out of eight is unconscionable?  Most of the men on Council have Daughters would they not want them to seek public Office?  This no time for exclusion!
