Daycare Eyes West Broad Street For A New Location

The Cradles to Crayons Learning Center is proposing to knock down a 124 year-old house near the train station in order to build a brand new child care facility at the site.

The center, currently located at 649 Central Avenue, is scheduled to come before the Westfield Zoning Board on Monday to appeal for preliminary and final major site plan approval with variance relief for certain items from the local land use laws.

The proposed site, at 417 West Broad St., is described on the Zillow real estate listings site as a 6-bedroom, 2-bath, 4,000 square foot structure originally constructed in 1890.

Variance relief is needed to allow a kindergarten and child care center in an area zoned for residential use, to allow three stories when two is the norm, to permit an increased maximum floor area ratio, and other things.

Reached by phone at her busy infant to pre-kindergarten center, owner Cheryl Ann Palhares said she preferred not to comment on the application scheduled to come before the Board of Adjustment Feb. 10.

The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Council Chambers, 425 East Broad Street in Westfield.
