Update: Raritan Valley Train Struck and Killed Man on Tracks Near Fanwood

The victim has not been identified at this time.

A Raritan Valley train struck and killed a man who was on the tracks between Netherwood and Fanwood Friday night.

Courtney Caroll, a spokesman for NJ Transit police, told Patch that shortly before 6 p.m., the 5:37 p.m. Raritan Valley Line train out of Newark was en route to High Bridge when the conductor spotted a man on the tracks. The conductor put on the emergency brakes, but was unable to stop the train in time, striking and fatally injuring the man, who has not been identified at this time.

Caroll said that there were 550 passengers on the train, all of whom were transferred to another train to continue their trip. The entire process took about an hour.

As a result, the Raritan Valley line did experience delays of 15 to 20 minutes in both directions.

NJ Transit police are still investigating the incident. Caroll said no further details are available at this time.
