Two Northside Burglaries Sunday

Homes forcibly entered.

Two northside residences were burglarized Sunday evening with over $5,000 taken in total. The homes were just over a block apart.

Police responded to a call from a resident of Michael Drive that a burglary had occurred between 7:15 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. that evening. The resident reported that an unknown actor or actors had forced open a sliding door in the rear of the house to gain entry. A $300 purse and $150 in cash were reported missing from the residence. The burglar appeared to have exited through the same door.

The same evening, a resident on nearby Woodbrook Circle reported a burglary to their home. Entry to this home was gained by forcibly opening a window. The resident said two laptop computers and currency were stolen from the home. The total taken from the residence was $5,199.

It is not known if the two burglaries were by the same individual. Both homes are located just off of Springfield Avenue on the Cranford border.

There was an attempted burglary on Rahway Avenue earlier in January. In that case, a resident reported that an unknown person tried to force open the front door of the home around midnight. Police have been working with departments from neighboring communities regarding a series of burglaries which have been occurring around town since last spring.

Many of the burglaries have occurred in neighborhoods near major highways. The two on Sunday lie roughly halfway between the Rt. 22 exit in Springfield and Exit 138 on the Garden State Parkway in Kenilworth.
