Two Female Pedestrians Hit by Car Saturday Night

Struck at intersection of W. Broad and Rahway Avenue.

Two female pedestrians are at University Hospital in Newark after being hit by a car at the intersection of West Broad Street and Rahway Avenue early Saturday evening.

The two pedestrians were hit by a black four-door Lincoln driven by a delivery person for a local restaurant, shortly after 6 p.m. According to a witness of the aftermath of the accident, one victim was seen lying in the cross walk going across West Broad Street and the other was closer to the Dominos Pizza restaurant. According to a firefighter on the scene, both victims appeared to be conscious when emergency personnel arrived. The witness said the victim in the crosswalk appeared to be moving her head at one point.

The victims were secured on scene and given neck braces and back boards before being transported to University Hospital. The names of the victims were not immediately released. Both victims were Spanish speaking and a Spanish speaking police officer was summoned to provide translation.

The driver, a white male appearing to be in his late teens or early 20s, was being questioned by police at the scene and did not apper to be under arrest. The driver, who declined to be interviewed or provide his name, was visibly shaken during the questioning by police. He was clad in a sweatshirt, jeans and flip flops with no socks and was seen shivering while sitting on the front bumper of a fire truck between questions.

The driver was with a woman who arrived at the scene after the accident, whose relationship to the driver was not disclosed. During the questioning by police, the driver did not have an attorney present and it is not known if he called an attorney for assistance.

A witness who saw the aftermath of the accident said she heard the driver slam on his brakes and briefly talked to the driver who said he slammed on his brakes before he struck the two pedestrians.

During the questioning, a man appearing to be the driver's boss arrived at the scene and was permitted to take the food order from the Lincoln to deliver to the customers.

This is the latest in a series of pedestrian accidents in town this year. In April, a pedestrian was killed by a car while crossing East Broad Street. Over the summer a Lord & Taylor employee crossing North Avenue was hit and severely injured by an apparent drunk driver in the middle of the afternoon. Over the summer a biker was hit by an SUV at the intersection of South Avenue and Downer Street, close to the scene of Saturday night's accident.
