Two Burglaries Last Week

Burglars hit homes on south side of town.

Two burglaries occurred on Oct. 22 or 23, within blocks of each other, with entry to the homes obtained through forcibly opening windows, Westfield police say.

On Oct. 23, a resident of the 200 block of Massachusetts Street reported a burglary with entry to the residence being achieved by forcibly opening a garage window. The bedrooms were ransacked and several pieces of jewelry and a quantity of cash was stolen.

On Oct. 26, a resident of the 300 block of Connecticut Street reported a burglary and theft. The resident had noted possible signs of forced entry to a rear window on Oct. 23 but did not report the crime until Oct. 26, when he determined a burglary had occurred. The resident reported that $1,600 in jewelry was stolen from the residence.

A resident in the neighborhood said that in one of the crimes, the window had been left open approximately two inches, allowing the burglar to force the window open to gain entry. Police have informed residents in the neighborhood that the burglars are usually looking for jewelry, cash and other small items to take and have not been stealing larger electronic items.

There have been few burglaries in this neighborhood. One occurred over the summer on Wyoming Street. Most burglaries in the last year have either been centered in the Gardens or in the Shadowlawn neighborhood on the south side.
