Update: Three-Car Accident Closes Part of Central Avenue

The Westfield Police Department said the three-car accident that occurred at 5:23 p.m. Wednesday on Central Avenue was caused when a stopped northbound vehicle waiting to make a left turn into Clover Street was struck from behind.

"The impact caused his vehicle to be pushed into the southbound lanes where he was struck by another vehicle traveling south," said Westfield Police Captain Clifford Auchter. "There were three vehicles involved, and all three were towed from scene. One driver was taken to Overlook Hospital for treatment of head and neck injuries. He was treated and released."

Central Avenue was closed off between Starlite Court and Massachusetts Street for more than an hour.
