Update 1:30 p.m. Tuesday: Overturned Car on Lawrence Avenue Sends Two to Hospital

Driver hit a parked car on 500 block of Lawrence Avenue.

Update 1:30 p.m. Tuesday

The sole witness to the car accident that took place on the 500 block of Lawrence Avenue Monday afternoon said the driver had been driving erratically just prior to the incident.

"I had been driving behind this car from Elm Street," the witness said. "It turned onto Dudley, driving erratically into a pile of leaves and then onto Lawrence.  The leaves did not cause him to skid when on Lawrence. The car was not near leaves-it just drove toward the Mini Cooper, hit the rear left side and flipped. I watched it all happen and gave my report to the police. The couple is elderly."

The witness, who said the car had been travelling slowly, called 911 and stayed with the couple until Westfield Police and the Westfield Volunteer Emergency Squad arrived at the scene.

The owner of the Mini Cooper told Patch that she was unaware the accident had occurred until she heard the sirens.

Emergency squad president Reid Edles said he did not know the condition of the couple at this time.

Original: Westfield Police and Fire Departments responded to the scene of an overturned car on the 500 block of Lawrence Avenue shortly after 2 p.m. Monday afternoon.

A driver and passenger were extricated from an overturned Buick Regal and transported to the hospital by the Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad.

It is believed that the driver hit a parked Mini Cooper before the car flipped.

Residents said the intersection of Dudley and Lawrence Avenues, not far from where this accident occurred, has been the location of many accidents in the past, one involving an overturned car a year ago.

Police could not provide any additional details at the scene as the investigation is ongoing.

Lawrence Avenue was closed between Dudley and Sylvania Avenues as of 2:45 p.m.
