Few Accidents During Snow Storm

Eight accidents during the height of the storm.

There were eight car accidents in Westfield during the height of the snow storm which hit town and the entire Mid-Atlantic region on Saturday.

This number represents half of the accidents in town over the weekend. Police Captain Clifford Auchter said the accidents were judged based on the data available from 2 p.m. on Saturday to Noon on Sunday, the key times of heavy snow fall in the community.

"Since we had eight accidents on the dry side of things, we had some but not a lot," he said.

The accidents were not serious in nature, with the ones during the storm attributed to storm conditions impacting drivers. Auchter did not the exact details of the eight in-town crashes.

Auchter attributes the low amount of storm related wrecks to driver caution in the wake of weather reports forecasting a blizzard with white out conditions likely. During the actual storm, small scale white out conditions were observed in town and some streets were hard to pass before DPW plows hit them. Few cars were observed in town on Saturday evening during the height of the storm.

"Part of the reason is that people were well informed of the storm and arranged to be off the roads when it hit," he said.
