Food Drive Whets Appetite for Service

Caring In Action...

The Presbyterian Church in Westfield (PCW) ran a food drive in early October to bring awareness to the Sunday School children in the church and to help alleviate hunger in NJ.

Members of the church donated approximately 200 pounds of food from the food drive that was sponsored by the Mission Commission of the church.

The food was delivered to the New Jersey Food Bank in Hillside and a contingent of volunteers went to the Food Bank on Saturday, October 5 to offer manual labor in the facility.

Alice Davenport, one of the organizers of the volunteer activity, reported a fine turn out and a gratifying time in volunteering.  “We spent the morning working with bulk pasta.  We bagged the pasta into portions, placed eight portions in each box, sealed and stacked the boxes,”she said.

While at the New Jersey Food Bank, the PCW crew packed a total of 50 boxes filled with 400 bags. The largesse from churches and civic organizations go to not-for-profit programs like area soup kitchens and food pantries as well as individual households that need supplemental food.

“It was heart -warming to be able to do something for others,” Ms. Davenport said of the work experience. “I would much rather give up a few hours of my time to be part of the solution than spend it worrying about the problems our society faces as a result of a struggling economy and the high cost of living.”
