Community Corner

Speaker to discuss ARGO

Westfield - The Presbyterian Church in Westfield (PCW) has issued an invitation to the community to attend a free, informative talk by the Reverend Bob Pryor on Sunday, March 2 at 11:30 p.m. in the church’s Assembly Hall at 140 Mountain Avenue, Westfield, NJ 07090.

Rev. Pryor’s talk will focus on the Oscar – winning movie “Argo”, directed by and starring Ben Affleck, about the Iranian hostage crisis, which began with the siege of the American embassy in Tehran and the taking of over 50 American hostages on November 4, 1979. Six managed to escape and hide in the home of the Canadian ambassador. The movie depicts the scheme that was devised and carried out for their escape from Iran. At the March 2nd talk, Rev. Pryor will share stories of his time in Iran and will separate what is fact from fiction in this movie.

Rev. Pryor, as a young man, spent his junior year as a full time student in Beirut, Lebanon majoring in the history of the Middle East. He lived in Iran for 15 years prior to the siege of the US Embassy in November 1979. Following his return from Iran, he served for two years at the Presbyterian Church in Westfield as interim pastor.

He will also share fascinating stories of events not shown in the movie, including the take-over of his very own church and a different take-over of the US Embassy.
