Westfield Native Carmella Merrill Stevenson Dies at 84

Merrill Stevenson lived in Westfield for 75 years before moving to Freehold.

Carmella Merrill Stevenson passed away on Sept. 1 at CentraState Medical Center in Freehold. She was born and raised in Westfield, where she lived until her move to Freehold in 2005.

Merrill Stevenson was the daughter of the late, Michael and Jennie Merrill of Westfield. She graduated Westfield High School in 1947 and was a member of the The Presbyterian Church in Westifled for over 58 years. Merill Stevenson was also a bookkeeper and sales associate at Auster’s Appliance Store in Westfield for 36 years before her retirement.

“Carmella enjoyed trips to Atlantic City and playing cards with her friends,” her obituary at Clayton & McGirr Funeral home stated.  “She was an avid sports enthusiast, especially watching RAW Wrestling, the NY Giants, and the Yankees.  But more than anything, she loved watching her grandchildren grow up to be wonderful young adults.”

Her husband, retired Lt. Thomas P Stevenson of the Westfield Fire Department predeceased Merill Stevenson in 2008 and a grandson James Stevenson Warnock predeceased her in 2007.

Visitation will be held at Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home in Freehold Township on Sept. 5 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. A graveside service will be held for family and friends at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield on Sept. 6 at 10:30 a.m.
