Significant ice threat developing Wednesday morning

One storm leaves and another is on the way for the Philadelphia and New York City metropolitan areas.  After receiving 4 to 8 inches of snow throughout the Philadelphia and New York City metropolitan areas, another winter storm will produce periods of snow, sleet, and freezing rain just in time for tomorrow morning's rush hour commute.  If that wasn't enough, another winter storm is brewing for this Sunday as well.

A break in the active weather is expected today with scattered cloud cover and seasonably cold temperatures.  Winds will be from the north at 10 to 20 mph.  Temperatures will rise into the upper 20's to lower 30's over the interior and mid 30's along the coast.

An area of low pressure developing over the Mississippi River Valley will lift into the Ohio River Valley this evening and redevelop off the Delaware coast overnight before exiting into the Atlantic tomorrow afternoon.  This low pressure system will produce periods of light to moderate snow after 11 PM tonight for the entire New York City and Philadelphia metropolitan areas.  As the warm air from the Atlantic Ocean starts to erode away the cold air, the snow will mix with and change over to sleet and freezing rain from east to west.  The cold air though will put up a fight thus many locations will experience a prolonged period of sleet and freezing rain before changing over to rain on Wednesday morning.  Temperatures through the period will steadily rise into the lower to mid 30's over the interior and upper 30's to lower 40's along the coast by late Wednesday morning.  The map below features the expected impacts.

The storm will exit by Wednesday afternoon with high pressure taking hold Wednesday night through Saturday with tranquil weather conditions expected.  Scattered cloud cover can be expected but use cause as with cold temperatures in place, icy roadways and sidewalks are going to be a significant problem.  Temperatures will range from the mid 10's to lower 20's for lows and upper 20's to mid 30's for highs.

Another winter storm is expected to impact the region on Sunday.  The details of this storm are very uncertain as models vary on timing, strength, and even boundary layer temperatures.  There is a threat for a significant snowfall between Sunday morning and Monday morning.  Temperatures will range from the upper 10's to mid 20's for lows and lower to mid 30's for highs.

High pressure will be in control by Monday afternoon with clearing skies.  Temperatures will not move much with lows in the lower to mid 20's and highs in the mid to upper 20's.
