College Planning Adjustments After Hurricane Sandy

The aftermath of any natural disaster is a tough time for many, including college applicants and students. For those heavily affected by the storm, applying to college can be even more challenging.

No one imagined the devastation experienced in the New Jersey/NYC area during and after Hurricane Sandy came ashore near Atlantic City last week.

The aftermath of any natural disaster is a tough time for many, including college applicants and students.  For those heavily affected by the storm, applying to college can be even more challenging.  Yet, most of the obstacles can be remedied or accommodated.

Many storm victims have loss of personal property, including the important documents necessary for applying to college.  These can include birth certificates, immunizations forms, and/or tax documents.  Most all documents of this nature can be replaced by the appropriate state and Federal agencies.

Standardized Testing

Thousands scheduled to take the SAT have been affected by the storm.   Many students were unable to get to testing centers or had their test cancelled.  The College Board is assessing their ability to continue at certain centers and is rescheduling tests for all of those affected.  They are also allowing displaced students to transfer their scheduled location to an upcoming test at no charge.

Application Deadlines

While many considering Early Admission may have already applied by the time Hurricane Sandy came ashore on October 29th, other applicants were potentially deprived several days to submit applications.  Early Admission allows students to apply and be accepted before the regular application process begins.  Numerous schools are accommodating those affected by the storm with extended deadlines or flexibility in their policies.  Students should inquire with each school to determine specific changes.

The New York Times reports that several schools have extended deadlines or will work with applicants that have been affected by the storm.  You can find the article here: http://thechoice.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/10/31/colleges-extend-early-admi...
