Farmers Market Season Off to Berry Good Start

Season opened Saturday and vendors were quickly sold out of fresh berries.

The Westfield Farmers Market, sponsored by the Greater Westfield Area Chamber of Commerce, attracted plenty of visitors on its opening day.

Running from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays through Oct. 26, the market featured returning vendors Donaldson Farms, Peaceful Valley Orchards and Skeba Farms as well as newcomer Sutton Family Farms, a dairy farm offering an assortment of cheeses and yogurts.

Thanks to a steady stream of shoppers, Donaldson Farms was sold out of its fresh raspberries and blueberries before noon.

While merchants were previously situated in Lot 3 of the South Avenue train station, the market will be set up closer to the intersection of South and Summit Avenues, still within the lot.

Heather Robinson, executive director of the GWACC, explained that the market is an extension of the chamber's "shop local, buy local" philosophy, with everything sourced from within the Garden State. Robinson said she's encouraging the community to start off its weekly shopping at the market and plan meals around its fresh offerings. Though the season is off to a good start, Robinson said this is "just the beginning" and looks foward to additional vendors joining the market in the coming weeks.
