Lunch & Learn: Sicily - From Garibaldi to Mussolini

History buffs and those of Italian descent will be especially interested in the March 5th First Wednesday Luncheon presentation by a member of the Westfield Historical Society(WHS) and which highlights the events that shaped present day Sicily. The presentation will be held at the Echo Lake Country Club, 515 Springfield Avenue, Westfield. This presentation is open to the public.

After the three course luncheon, WHS member Bruce Long will present the third installment in his series of historical highlights on Sicily, this one entitled “From Garibaldi to Mussolini”. In his last two lectures, Mr. Long’s presentations covered the structure of ancient Sicily up to the formation of the nation of Italy in the 1860s. His upcoming talk will cover the period from Italy’s unification up to the modern era, ending with World War II and Benito Mussolini’s fascist regime. Rather than a strictly chronological presentation, Bruce will focus on significant events throughout the period and how they shaped the Sicily of today. A question and answer session follows the formal presentation.

Mr. Long is a retired engineer, having spent the last 23 years of his career with Prudential as Vice President, Engineering, in their real estate investment department. Since his retirement, Mr. Long volunteers with several organizations including, Prudential Retirees Association, Plainfield Habitat for Humanity, the Downtown Westfield Corporation, and the IRS’ Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program. He is also a trustee of the Westfield Senior Housing Corporation, actively involved in their new project, the Village at Garwood.

This is expected to be a popular presentation, and those wishing to ensure a seat should make a reservation by calling 908-233-2930. The luncheon fee of $25 (WHS members) or $30 (non-members) can be paid by phone or at the event.
