Scholar in Residence Erev Shabbat Service

Temple Emanu-El is honored to have Rabbi Mark Washofsky join us for a Shabbat of learning.  On Friday, March 8, during evening Shabbat services at 7:45 p.m., Rabbi Washofsky will speak on “Reform Responsa: How Jewish Tradition Responds to Today’s Issues.”  All are welcome free of charge.

He will also lead a Lunch and Learn on Saturday, March 9, on “Playing God: Jewish Law and Genetic Engineering.”  Both events are open to all.  The $5 dairy lunch from Deli King of Linden on Saturday requires pre-registration (sign up form can be found on our website www.tewnj.org).  This program is sponsored by the Charles A. Kroloff Fund for Jewish Learning.

Rabbi Mark Washofsky, PhD, is the Solomon B. Freehof Professor of Jewish Law at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC) in Cincinnati.   He specializes in the literature of Jewish law and the application of legal theory to the understanding of the Jewish legal process. His publications deal with such subjects as the history of the halakhah, the nature of rabbinical decision making, and issues of medical ethics in Jewish law. He serves as chair of the Responsa Committee of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, which issues advisory opinions on questions of Jewish practice.
