Westfield Community Players (WCP) presents its third production of the season with the 2001 Pulitzer Prize and 2001 Drama Critic's and Tony Award winning play, Proof by David Auburn. It opens on March 2 and runs March 9, 16, 22 and 23 at 8pm; a matinee performance is on March 10. The production is directed by Steve Lemenille (of Clark), who directed Dial 'M' for Murder, A View from the Bridge and Squabbles for WCP; and produced by Sally Brown (of Westfield).
The play concerns itself with Catherine, a troubled young woman, who on the eve of her twenty-fifth birthday, has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father, a famous mathematician. Now, following his death, she must deal with her own volatile emotions; the arrival of her estranged sister, Claire; and the attentions of Hal, a former student of her father's who hopes to find valuable work in the 103 notebooks that her father left behind. Over the long weekend that follows, a burgeoning romance and the discovery of a mysterious notebook draw Catherine into the most difficult problem of all: How much of her father's madness-or genius-will she inherit?
The cast includes veteran WCP actor, John Correll, as the father, Robert (of Winfield Park) and new-comers to WCP: Shiva Kiani (of Newark), as Catherine; Kristin Barber-Furlong (of Morris Plains), as Claire, Catherine's sister and Bobby Marusiefski (of Rahway), as Hal.
