Why is NJ Residents for Action now pointing people to the "Gun Control. Now." petition (http://signon.org/sign/gun-control-now-1), rather than the one it started (http://www.change.org/petitions/federal-ban-on-military-style-assault-weapons-and-high-capacity-magazine-clips)?

I support our President's efforts to get his (and Congress' collective) head and arms around gun violence in the US and to take sensible action. That said, I'm struggling to understand how emotive petitions containing specific demands help. If you want to write a purely emotional petition, do that (and as long as you don't get specific, you'll probably then get more than 275 signatures). If you want to do the harder work of writing one with specific demands, do that... but take your time and do your homework. Emotive + uninformed demands = silly. Though the two petitions (see my first comment) are different, I don't find either to be entirely coherent, with Ms. Sarkin's self-assessment being "incredibly basic and not all that well informed" and with Ms. Egert somehow confusing magazines and ammunition. I also note that inconsistencies in online posts written by Ms. Egert, seem to betray more far-reaching intentions than those in her petition... which then is also a "wrong champion" issue for me. I share the frustration and outrage at unspeakable tragedies like the one in Newtown, and it is my humble opinion that if we want to SEE change on this difficult subject (that, like it or not, has 2nd amendment connections not only the our Constitution but also to existing US Code... which can't just be ignored), we need to find moderate, informed champions to latch onto... not well-intentioned but emotive/reactive petitions and demonstrations like these.

1 PM on a weekday... maybe these women should get real jobs and "move on"
karen egert February 19, 2013 at 01:40 AM
Im sorry Russ H , but emotive and passionate petitions are what start the ball rolling. NO ONE IS TAKING AWAY ANYONE'S SECOND AMENDMENT RIGHTS. Im sure there were those in the times of the American Revolution that found that some statements from the founding fathers were more emotive at times than pure substantive, But EMOTION is what begins change.
karen egert February 19, 2013 at 01:43 AM
And we are in protest of our Congressman Leonard Lance's complete silence on this issue and his unwillingness to take ANY stand regarding what can be done substantively on this issue.
karen egert February 19, 2013 at 01:44 AM
We are looking to him for leadership -- and he has given us NOTHING
karen egert February 19, 2013 at 01:45 AM
That is why we are protesting his office ......
karen egert February 19, 2013 at 02:07 AM
And for Johnny T - we are doing sonething good for our children and for our country . How DARE you INSULT me or anyone else in our group . And how do YOU know what kind of jobs we have ? and more importantly is it any of YOUR business ? It's sounds like you are just trying to be a bully . And it's very unnattractive to say the least
Bigger issues to worry about February 19, 2013 at 03:03 AM
I have to agree with Russ H and Johnny T on this one Karen. Most of your argument has been developed on emotions without delving into the issue and having a comprehensive approach to solving all gun violence without affecting the rights of law abiding citizens. The last thing I want to do is sacrifice even the smallest amount of my rights and freedoms without addressing the entire issue. It took close to 4 months to write the original US Constitution with well thought out arguments and potential repercussions for each element. Also, 1pm on a workday! Is that really the best time to "demonstrate" and the views of all of the constituents in the district?
karen egert February 19, 2013 at 03:29 AM
Mr Bjgger issues to Worry About . You are Incorrect -- I have delved into the issue . You only pick and choose one post you see . The question is have YOU delved into the issue ?? What have YOU TRIED to do about it other than put well meaning people down? . What have YOU DONE for those families ? We met with our Congressman. We are trying . What are people like YOU doing other than finding fault in those who care enough to face bullies like you -- empty bullies at that . As far as the day we chose it is because Congress is out of session and that's WHY . Ofcourse you wouldn't know that STOP BEING PETTY ALL OF YOU AND GROW You sound like immature two year olds
karen egert February 19, 2013 at 03:33 AM
And stop talking about your " rights" being taken away . You sound ridiculous . Most of the people like you that have to write these things are just plain and simple MEAN and BULLIES
Russ H February 19, 2013 at 04:58 AM
I'll be more succinct this time. Emotion is good. Thoughtful, informed and specific ideas are good. Emotive, uninformed demands that don't acknowledge the complexity of the subject matter might get a bandwagon rolling, but I don't believe they are helpful in rolling the real ball of change. Perhaps you should let someone else drive... which is what I assume you are doing by now pointing to Ms. Sarkin's petition rather than your own. Admirable in its humility, but when her assessment of her own petition is that it is "not all that well informed", my point still stands.
A.John Blake February 19, 2013 at 11:53 AM
Sir, It may have taken four months to write the original constitution but they obviously didn't get it perfect the first time because of the necessity of all of the amendments. No One can sit down and write a law that can cover every conceivable issue which could be affected by it. That is the perfect argument for someone who is against any change, the proposals don't over everything therefore we should consider none of them. The original constitution was written with negotiations among the various colonies. One colony did not have all the answers so compromise was needed. What about using the spirit of compromise that motivated the Founding Fathers. Mr.Lance's silence is reprehensible. He has no problem accepting contributions from the arms manufacturers. His position has been obvious. Why can't he be honest with the people he represents and tell them exactly where he stands. A.John Blake

Ahhhh. The overused BULLY comment in big capital letters. You must be angry now. If someone does not agree with your view, they are a bully. Who is being a bully when they call someone a 2 year old. Emotions have gotten the best of you and now you have resorted to name calling. As for issues! I have stated before that I am more concerned with rampant spending and the burden that will be placed on future generations due to the actions of our politicians over the years. Gun violence will continue to increase when there are no jobs and people feel desperate. I am not against change per se Mr. Blake, but I am against the erosion of my law abiding rights one nibble at a time. I would like to see all of DC and Elizabeth changed to a view for the future economic safety of this country and county.

Why would you want a pol to "lead" you like Obama leads his lemmings by the nose? Lead yourself. He support the constitution which includes the second amendment. What part of "shall not be infringed" don't you people understand?
Barbara McDevitt February 20, 2013 at 02:53 PM
I think my job as a pediatrician qualifies as real. I'm using my day off. And I'm doing so because I care for and about the children of America.

For all who need to attend the meeting protest, the location has been changed to a more meaningful location. Go to Elizabeth and Plainfield in front of Gang HQ.
