Do You Know Your Uncle Sam?- A New Family Education Program

Looking for
something to do with your children when school’s out for the New Jersey
teacher’s convention on Friday November 8th?  Macculloch Hall Historical Museum is offering
a new Family Education Program from 10 – 12 noon - Do You Know Your Uncle Sam? Get to know the origins of Uncle Sam,
a favorite United States icon popularized by Thomas Nast (1840-1902), through
art, activities, and a visit to the Museum’s Thomas Nast Gallery.

This program is
held in conjunction with exhibit Thomas Nast Brings Down Boss Tweed which is currently on display in the second
floor of the museum. The exhibit features over twenty examples of the
political cartoons Thomas Nast created attacking Boss Tweed and Tammany
Hall.

The family
program will utilize this special exhibit and offer families an opportunity to
take part in educational projects which focus on Nast's drawings of Uncle
Sam.  Families will find out more about the history of Uncle Sam and make
printed images of Uncle Sam to take home.
Through hands-on activities, families find out more about the history of
Uncle Sam, from the War of 1812 to World War I, and the role political
cartoonist and 19th century Morristown resident, Thomas Nast, played in Uncle
Sam's popularity. While at the museum, families can see replica images of some
of Nast's drawings of Uncle Sam, including his image, "Uncle Sam's
Thanksgiving Dinner" from the November 20, 1869 edition of Harper's Weekly. Kids can create an
original piece of printed artwork using ink and brayer. Preregistration is
required. Cost is $6 per child for Museum members and $8 per child for
non-members (fee includes materials). No charge for accompanying adult. There
is a morning session from 10 am to noon and afternoon session from 1 to 3 p.m.
