Cranford Treasure Hunt and Sweets Galore...summer finale fundraiser

Make plans to bring family and friends to Treasure Hunt & Sweets Galore, a scavenger hunt, face painting, raffle, and dessert tasting all in downtown Cranford on Tuesday evening, Sept. 3 beginning at 6 p.m.

Treasure Hunt & Sweets Galore will be a fun summer finale for families to enjoy before schools open in September. Participants will explore the downtown looking for scavenger hunt clues and enjoying sweet treats from downtown businesses. The event, co-sponsored by the Junior League of Elizabeth-Plainfield and the Cranford Historic Preservation Advisory Board, is a fundraiser for the preservation of the Roosevelt School fireplace.

“We chose the date to coincide with the Family Dinner Night project sponsored by the Cranford Municipal Alliance and thought it would be a terrific end-of-summer event,” said Maureen Strazdon of CHPAB.

In 2010, a historic fireplace was removed from the Roosevelt/Solomon Schechter Day School on Orange Avenue just before it was demolished. The Cranford Historic Preservation Advisory Board wants to make the fireplace accessible once again to the people of Cranford. All proceeds from Treasure Hunt & Sweets Galore will go toward the installation of the fireplace in in the lobby of the Community Center.

The Roosevelt Elementary School was opened in Cranford on Sept. 10, 1928, with 14 class rooms, including a special kindergarten room with a tile fireplace. The fireplace, measuring about 8 feet wide by 6 feet high, was created by the Flint Faience Company and features a scene made up of 10 tiles, 6-inch by 6-inch each, portraying a duck and two hens in a barnyard. It is featured in Flint's 1926 company catalog.
