Snow Notes: Warmer Weather Lowers Sledding Turnout, Storm Downs Boulevard Tree Limb

Mud and snow combine on Echo Lake sledding hill.

The winter storm may have given the most action on Thursday and Friday, but Saturday continued to have after effects of the storm, with more downed trees found and residents enjoying the snow.

Light Sledding Turnout

With Saturday's temperatures hitting the 40s, some Westfielders thought spring was around the corner, while others hung on to a few more hours of winter fun.

Turnout at local sledding hotpots was lower than in the day after past storms, including the blizzard earlier this month. Only a few families could be found at Tamaques School and Wilson School, where previous storms have caused sledders to pack the hills.

At Echo Lake Park on the Westfield/Mountainside town line, turnout was moderate with parking easy to find, a far cry from the blizzard and December's heavy snow. Sledders did brave the hill, enjoying a day sliding down the local sledding icon. Mud was peering through the snow at spots, causing a different sledding experience for some.

Tree Limbs Fall on Boulevard

The 70 foot oak tree which toppled on to a house on Embree Crescent in the early hours of Friday morning was not the only tree impacted by the storm's heavy wet snow and strong winds.

The large limb of a tree on a home at the intersection of Wyoming Street and Boulevard had fallen off the tree and on to the front yard. Next door, the front bushes of a house were weighted down by the snow, lying flat with the ground at some points.
