Rabbi to Speak at MLK Service

Twenty third annual event to occur in January.

The 23rd annual Dr Martin Luther King Memorial Services will be held at Temple Emanu-EL on Monday, January 18, 2010 beginning at 1pm.  The MLK Jr. Association of Westfield is honored to announce Rabbi Charles A. Kroloff as the guest speaker for the program.  Rabbi Kroloff has an extensive resume including positions held locally, state level, colleges, as well as an author of several books.

There will be several awards given to students for art work, poetry, and essays.  Entries are open to any elementary or high school student who lives in or attends a Westfield school.  The theme for this year's program is "Individual Responsibility". All entries should include the student's name, grade, and school and be forwarded to the main office of the student's school by Thursday, January 7th.  Essays should be between 200 and 400 words and should be typed or neatly written.  Any artwork will be returned to the student, however, poetry and essays will not be returned.

Judging for these essays will be held on Saturday, January 9th beginning at 10am at the Westfield Community Center. The Association reminds all students and parents that their submission must be their own work, not the work of their parents or friends, and that this contest is conducted on the honor system.  All prize recipients will be notified by the Committee in the week prior to the service. The public is welcome to come in to assist in the judging, and refreshments will be served.

Past tradition has always included a march through downtown Westfield singing freedom songs of the 1960's.  This march starts at the MLK Monument (located near the South Ave circle) at 12:30pm.  Participants will then march to the Temple.  Also, the MLK Jr. association has donated an overwhelming amount of the proceeds to needy families and organizations.  If you have any questions about the program, contest, or donations please contact a member of the Dr. MLK Jr. Association of Westfield, or Elizabeth Wolf (908-654-6770) via email on  elizabethwolf@eawolf.com.

Temple Emanu-EL is located at 756 East Broad Street.  Judging for the contest is at the Westfield Community Center located at 558 West Broad Street.  There will be refreshments served immediately after the program.
