Breaking News: Raritan Valley Line Halted By Incident Near Fanwood Tracks

Reports indicate trespasser on the tracks caused the delays.

Riders on NJ Transit's Raritan Valley Line were backed up in both directions for hours Friday evening due to an incident near the Fanwood tracks.

According to the NJ Transit Web site, a "trespasser incident near Fanwood"caused delays of up to 45 minutes for those traveling to and from Newark.

Patch received several reports from residents who had family members on the stopped trains. One Fanwood resident stated that her husband, who was on a train stuck near Garwood, was told that travel was halted after a train hit a man who was trying to rescue his dog by the tracks.

Other readers reported around 7:55 p.m. that the conductor on their train stated that passengers may have to de-board. Travelers trying to get home from Newark reported around 9 p.m. that they were unable to board any Raritan Valley trains at that time.

The incident appears to have occurred behind some buildings off Old South Avenue in Fanwood, near Fanwood Liquors.

When Patch arrived at the scene at 8 p.m., Fanwood police and two fire trucks were just leaving. NJ Transit police who were still there refused to comment, other than to say "everything's all right now."
