Runners Welcome Cooler Temperatures at Annual Pizza Run

Some run competitively, some to stay in shape, and others just for the sheer enjoyment, but all the runners and spectators can agree this year's annual Pizza Run was a great one. The 12th annual running of the event, this year's race boasted a record amount of runners with over 2,700. It's hard to ignore the growth of this event which has become one of the largest non-corporate 5k races in the state. There's much more to this night than just running and pizza. Prizes, DJ entertainment, sponsorship booths, and live music by the Michael Craig Band & FOG all contributed to the stellar atmosphere of this year's event.
The recent heat wave broke just in time and runners embraced cooler temperatures as the race began just after 7 pm. One runner even noted that it was "the best weather we've had for this event and it makes it that much more enjoyable." If it was still a tad hot for you, local residents came to the rescue, setting up sprinklers and offering water to runners who may have needed some hydration between the race's two water stations.
Local runner Harrison Slater enjoyed the encouragement stating "it was awesome how everyone came out to support the runners by giving out water and turning on their sprinklers, all while still cheering in full support." Dan Corrigan elaborated by saying the race is "a great social setting. Its a blast to wave at people and see folks you know."
While many runners competed individually or with friends and family, some even formed small teams to compete. One such team was Roundtable Services, a wealth management firm located here in Westfield. Rob Davis explained that his team was comprised of 10 people who ranged from young college athletes to older members who he joked "were just happy to be walking in the event."
Others conquered the course rather quickly with the first runner crossing the finish line just after the 15 minute mark. More awards were given out after the race with honors presented to the top 3 overall winners of both sexes, top 3 of each age group, and the first 3 Westfield finishers.
Participants were happy to refuel on the free water and pizza provided to everyone after the race's completion.
