Sidewalk Sales Start Today

Sidewalk sale days to go from Thursday to Sunday.

Westfield’s shopping district will be buzzing with excitement this weekend as retailers hold their annual Sidewalk Sales Days from Thursday to Sunday.

Not only will there be deals, but there will also be live entertainment, courtesy of the Downtown Westfield Corporation.

Entertainment includes performances by Clown Chips, juggler Jennifer Slaw, and balloon artists The Mad Hatters in the downtown area.

According to Sherry Cronin, executive director of the DWC, the sale days are a way for downtown retailers to clear out seasonal products.

“Sidewalk sales are one of many kinds of promotional activities which are designed to ‘ring the registers," Cronin said.

Many stores, like the Gap, have already moved into their fall season, according to downtown Gap General Manager Nicole Foley, so expect to see good deals on summer merchandise.

According to Foley, the Gap has been participating in sidewalk sales “every year.”

“We have been pleased to see most of the national retailers participating,” said Cronin.

The Gap will be offering sales of up to 50 percent all weekend on their sidewalk merchandise.

The sales will be taking place rain or shine. Foley said that the event has been successful in the past, “as long as the weather is nice.” Regardless of the weather, however, this weekend’s sidewalk sales are sure to give the frugal consumer something to cheer about.

"Anytime, tables can be placed on the sidewalks full of bargains; customers will be attracted," Cronin said.
