Five Stars for Five Guys

Southern-based Five Guys Burgers and Fries restaurant brings burgers to downtown diners.

New to downtown Westfield is the trendy Southern-based Five Guys restaurant serving up fabulous fresh burgers and tasty fries. Luckily, Westfield residents no longer need to travel to Route 22 for these mouth-watering meals.

When you first enter the restaurant there is a distinct red and white checked pattern on the walls and even the lights are red and white.  Signs touting  the restaurant’s accolades such as “Heaven on a bun” or “Readers love Five Guys” adorn the walls.

As my friend and I walked into the packed restaurant on East Broad Street, we were thoroughly impressed by the friendly staff.  At Five Guys, orders are made at the counter from an oversized menu on the wall. After my friend and I were staring at the relatively limited choices of  burgers, fries and hot dogs for a few minutes, a friendly woman at the counter asked us if we were new to the restaurant and immediately offered helpful suggestions. However according to its Web site fiveguys.com, there are over 250,000 possible ways to order a burger at the restaurant.

Five Guys is known for its never-frozen burgers and freshly-baked potatoes from places such as Driggs, Idaho. The burgers carry a juicy, beefy flavor you will not find at a fast food chain. I ordered a “little hamburger” complete with only one patty instead of a regular hamburger which has two patties. I questioned why they did not ask me how I wanted my burger done, and they happily responded saying that all of their burgers are cooked well-done to prevent any food-borne illnesses.

The prices for burgers and fries at Five Guys are higher compared with the typical fast food chain. My “little hamburger” with complementary toppings (upon request) of lettuce, pickles, tomato and ketchup cost $3.29. My friend ordered a regular hamburger that was well-seasoned and jazzed up with everything. Such an adorned burger includes nine toppings with mayo, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms,  ketchup, mustard and green peppers. Upon request they will also add relish, onions, jalapeno peppers, A-1 sauce, Bar-B-Q sauce and hot sauce.

A “regular” cup of French fries costs $2.59 although I soon discovered that a “regular” cup really means extra large as some of my friends had warned me. After only five minutes following my order, my food was ready and I picked it up on the counter. Feeling like I was back in elementary school, my order came in a large brown paper bag and my hamburger was wrapped in tin foil.

Similar to other self-service restaurants, my friend and I sat ourselves down at a table and delved into our meals. Although the burgers were oozing their toppings and may not have appeared appealing to others, they were absolutely delicious. I, for one, was stuffed after my “little hamburger” even before I tasted the fries. Luckily, my friend and I shared the fries because it definitely would have been too much for just one person. My friend thought her burger was amazing, but she wished she had only ordered the “little hamburger.” Needless to say, we were both stuffed from our meals, but we left Five Guys feeling satisfied and content.  We will definitely return, but will probably order smaller meals in the future.
