If you're rolling out your own red carpet for Oscar night and want to make your guests feel like celebrities, is sharing some recipes that are just the ticket.
While dishing about what the stars are wearing and debating the merits of the nominees, sample some new appetizers and a fizzy spiced soda, recipes courtesy of the East Broad Street shop.
"They're quick 'n' easy, delish and overall crowd pleasers," said Jackie Mittelhammer, who owns the spice mecca with her sister Becky Solheim.
Savory Spiced Soda
4 whole star anise
1 tablespoon pink peppercorns
1 teaspoon whole allspice
2 cups water
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 bunch fresh thyme
1 (2-inch) strip lemon zest
1 liter chilled club soda
Heat a medium sauce pan over medium-high heat. Add the spices and stir to toast for 2 minutes or until you smell the spices begin to toast. Add the water and sugar and bring to a simmer. Stir to dissolve the sugar. Add the fresh thyme and the lemon peel. Cover, reduce the heat, and let simmer for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes remove from heat and let cool.To serve, fill 4 cocktail glasses with ice. Add 1/4 cup spiced simple syrup to each glass and top with club soda.
For an "adult" version, start with a shot of gin, then add the syrup and top with club soda.
Mediterranean Spiced Cucumber Medallions
4 oz Chevre goat cheese
1/4 cup Greek Yogurt
1/4 red bell pepper chopped, reserve the other half for garnish
1 tbsp. Savory Spice Shop's Mt. Olympus Greek Style Seasoning
1 English Cucumber, sliced into ½ inch rounds
Place the goat cheese, yogurt, 1/4 red bell pepper, lemon zest, garlic, salt, pepper, oregano, and the mint in a food processor and puree until smooth. Place the goat cheese mixture into a plastic zip top bag and cut a small hole in the corner. Lay out the cucumber circles and top with the goat cheese mixture. Thinly slice the remaining red bell pepper and garnish each cucumber with 1 slice of pepper.
Moroccan Chicken Skewers with Herb Sauce
Ingredients for the Chicken:
3 boneless, skinless chicken
breasts, cut into 1-inch cubes
5 (8-inch skewers), soaked 1 hour
3 tbsp. Savory Spice Shop's Tan-Tan Moroccan Seasoning
Ingredients for the Herb Sauce:
1/4 cup cilantro leaves 1/2 cup mint leaves 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 tablespoon ground ginger
1/2 tablespoon kosher salt
Juice of 1 lime
1 1/2 teaspoon honey
1/2 cup olive oil
Preheat grill to medium-high heat
Directions for the chicken:
Combine all of the spices and sugar in a large bowl. Add the cubed chicken and toss to coat. Place the chicken on the skewers and lay on the grill. Cook for 10 to 12 minutes, until the chicken is cooked through, turning often so that the spices don’t burn.
Directions for the herb sauce:
Add the fresh herbs, spices, lime juice, and honey to a blender carafe. Blend to combine and slowly add the olive oil with the motor running. Once combined, taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary.
Serve sauce along side the skewers for dipping or drizzled over the top of the skewers.
