Westfield High Volleyball Team's 'Pink Out' Returns for Fifth Year

The fundraising effort is aimed to raise awareness for breast cancer.

The Westfield High School girls volleyball team will host its fifth annual “Pink Out” tournament on Friday against rival Watchung Hills in support of Breast Cancer Awareness.

Five years ago, the team rallied behind coach Bev Torok who was diagnosed with breast cancer. Once her doctor declared Torok cancer-free, she and the team were dedicated to raising awareness about Breast Cancer. The WHS team was recently recognized by the Susan G. Komen foundation for their efforts.

The Westfield High School gym will hopefully be a sea of pink Friday, as it has been in previous years to raise awareness about Breast Cancer. Last year, the girls raised more than $20,000. This year they are hoping to top that, according to junior varsity coach, Sara Liptack.

“The best part of the event is always seeing the community's support,” Liptack said. “The gym will be packed with fans in a sea of pink!  It is so great that the community comes together for a great cause!”

The “Pink Out” event is a giant undertaking by all involved. Parents break up into subcommittees to organize tasks, while the coaches and girls volunteer and donate their time to making the night a success. Town merchants are also incredibly generous, according to Liptack. The girls solicit donations, get support from the high school and, of course, play volleyball as the main part of the evening.

However, in addition to the games, a survivor ceremony is held for those who have overcome or are battling Breast Cancer.

“One of my absolute favorite parts of the event is the survivor ceremony, where we honor those who have fought or are currently fighting the disease,” Liptack expressed. “I can imagine that it is great for them to see the support.”

During the evening there will a giant food court, a Chinese auction, trick tray and 50/50. The Freshman Girls Volleyball Team will play at 4:30, the JV team at 5:30, a serving contest at 6:30 and the Varsity Match at 7 p.m.

Donations can be made to the team’s fundraising page. Tickets will be sold at the door of the game, but anyone wearing pink is admitted for free!
