WSO to Perform in Scotch Plains Tonight

Concert part of Scotch Plains' annual concert series.

For the second of five concerts for the 2010 Summer Cultural Arts Series, members of the Westfield Symphony Orchestra will perform a free concert today at the Village Green in Scotch Plains at 7:00 p.m. The musicians will play popular classics such as Aaron Copland's "Appalachian Spring" and Camille Saint-Saëns's "Carnival of the Animals." The members of the orchestra are also expected to perform selections from Antonio Vivaldi's Four Seasons concertos. The concert will run for at least one hour.

The Westfield Symphony Orchestra is in its 29th season and is the state's second largest orchestra. It was founded in 1983 by Westfield residents who wanted to promote operatic and symphonic music and to provide it for their local and state communities.

The symphony's director, David Wroe, has conducted symphonies in the United States, Europe and Asia, according to the symphony's website. He established and directed an orchestra in Kansas City, toured northern France as a director and conducted the City Opera of Heidelberg in Germany.

Although the Westfield Symphony Orchestra sometimes holds outreach programs and free concerts for communities that do not usually have opportunities to listen to a professional orchestra, it does not often perform free concerts advertised to the public.

The outdoor setting at the Village Green is also a rarity for the orchestra, which usually performs indoors at either the Presbyterian Church in Westfield or the Union County Performing Arts Center in Rahway.

Alfonso's, located on Park Ave. across the street from the event, will offer a special during the concert. Between 7:30 and 9:30 p.m., concertgoers can purchase two slices of pizza and a fountain soda for $3.99.
