Habla Espanol? Well, You Can Learn

Two local residents are leading a Spanish class for parents and their children at Westfield Memorial Library.

Have you been looking to learn a new language in a fun and community spirited way?

The answer is as close as the Westfield public library, where a Spanish class has started up for families looking to enhance their language skills.

It's called Grupo ñ and it's run by Westfield residents and husband and wife team Jonah Gensler and Mariana Canale. The group, which meets once a month, is meant to bring together parents and their children to learn Spanish.

Gensler said during the one hour meetings participants dance, listen to Spanish music and read Spanish books. Gensler said the children who attend are between one and six years old.

"It's connecting, making these books come alive and making these kids connect with each other in fun ways," Gensler said.

Gensler, who lived in Nicaragua and Spain, said he and Canale, who's from Argentina, decided to create the group because they wanted a way for their two young children to be exposed to Spanish language and culture.

"So they can see a greater world outside the walls of our home where people share similar values," Gensler said.

The next meeting of Grupo ñ will be on Saturday beginning at 10:30am. For more information or to join the group email Jonah Gensler at jonahgensler@gmail.com. You can also sign up for the class here.
